What it is

Carrom is played on a square wooden board with a pocket in each corner. Each side has nine coins, white or black, and there is one red queen. You flick a heavier disc, the striker, from your baseline to knock your coins into the pockets.

Khel ON's Carrom follows the International Carrom Federation laws, on a full-size 74 cm board. Play the computer at Easy, Medium or Hard, team up with a computer partner for doubles, or pass one phone around for two or four players. Five short lessons teach you to aim, cut, cover the queen and avoid fouls. There are no coins to buy and no betting, just points and win streaks.

How to play

  1. Place the striker

Put the striker on your baseline, between the two lines. It can cover a red base circle but must not touch a coin.

  2. Pull back and flick

Pull back from the striker and let go. Pocket one of your own coins and you shoot again; otherwise the turn passes to the right. Whoever breaks plays white.

  3. Take the queen and cover her

Once you have pocketed a coin, you may pocket the red queen. Then pocket one of your own coins on the very next shot to cover her, or she goes back to the centre.

  4. Clear your coins first

Pocket all your coins first to win the board. You score 1 point for each coin the other side has left, plus 3 for the queen if you covered her. First to 25 points, or the leader after 8 boards, wins.

Ways to play

Against the computer

Easy is gentle and misses plenty. Medium makes cut shots and banks. Hard plans its next shot and leaves you very little.

Doubles

Partners sit opposite and share a colour. Play with a computer partner, or pass the phone round four players.

Short games

Play one board, a short game to 13 points, or the full game to 25 points.
