How to play Checkers

Two players, 12 pieces each, on the dark squares of an 8×8 board. Orange moves first.

  1. Move one piece one step diagonally forward to an empty dark square.
  2. Jump to capture: if an opponent's piece is diagonally next to yours and the square behind it is empty, jump over it and take it off the board.
  3. Keep jumping in the same turn if you land where you can jump again.
  4. Must jump: if you can jump, you have to (you can turn this rule off for practice).
  5. Crown a King: reach the far row and your piece becomes a King. Kings move and jump forward and backward, one diagonal step at a time.
  6. Win by taking all your opponent's pieces or leaving them with no move.

Draw: the same position comes up three times, or 40 moves each go by with only kings moving and nothing captured.

Rules: American checkers (English draughts), as played by the American Checker Federation and the World Checkers/Draughts Federation, on the standard 8×8 board.
